In Gertie (1914), McCay disciplines his resisant animated dinosaur with a whip. Later, McCay's The Pet (1921), the animator disappears but the title character resists anyway, destroying an entire city.

Throughout early animation, producer/performers such as Bray, Fleischer and Lantz all pretended to struggle to contain their drawn characters: controlling a resistance to control that they themselves had created.
