Animation can make sound tangible. In the Disney Short Alice the Whaler (1927), when the notes of a jig float by a parrot, who plucks a note from the air and eats it.

This 1927 Disney short features a live actress interacting with animated characters, a variation on the theme of the live animator interacting with his creations. In this case, the central animated character is the cat Julius, an early Disney minstrel.
