There was a strong connection between newspaper comic strips and early animation. Extremely popular strips such as The Newlyweds (1904-1916), Katzenjammer Kids (1897-present), Krazy Kat (1910-1944), and Mutt and Jeff (1907-1982) were all adapted into animated cartoons. Under the strain of regular production schedules and tight deadlines, most comic strip artists used an indexical style of representation that depended on an economy of line and conventional gestures which audiences would readily recognize.
