Realizing that he is about to suffer mightily, Elmer Fudd looks imploringly toward his audience in What's Opera Doc? (1957). The violent humiliation that is visited upon cartoon characters' bodies is ritualized, produced over and over again as a celebration of its ability completely dominate its environment and its creations. The horror and violence are necessary for the slapstick to work. As the characters plead for sympathy from the viewer, their pleas are denied, more violence is inflicted on their bodies, and...we laugh.
