Trader Mickey performs the fantasy of jazz music as "jungle music," one promulgated in productions such as King of Jazz (1930),which announces to its viewers that "jazz was born in the African jungle to the beating of voodoo drums."

Portraying "Africa" as an exotic, chthonic landscape, Mickey and his captors play music with the human bones that litter the village. As in many other cartoons that featured jazz greats such as Cab Calloway or Louis Armstrong,  African American culture was often visually represented as an underworld seething with violence, sensuality, and death.
