Changing labor practices and media configurations in the late 1920s and early 1930s encouraged some live vaudeville performers to translate their stage skills for other mediums such as film and radio.

Cliff Edwards, a singer who sometimes performed in blackface on the Keith-Albee circuits, eventually went on to voice Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio (1940) and the problematic Jim Crow in Dumbo (1941). This scene, with its jazzy tone, minstrel characters and repurposing of the name "Jim Crow," performs the casual and pernicious racism of 1940s Hollywood.
