In a self-reflexive moment, the animated characters in Making 'Em Move repeat a gag from Uncle Josh at the Picture Show (1902), violently tearing down the screen to get the film's characters and dissolving the boundary between theatre, stage, and screen.
In Uncle Josh, the line between disbelief at the motion picture and desire to imitate it are blurred. This is especially evident when Uncle Josh tears down the screen to stop a couple embracing and kissing, then struggles with the projectionist.
