At the end of Uncle Tom's Bungalow (1937), one of many parodies of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Uncle Tom's gloved hand reaches through an aperture in the screen to reclaim the dice that he used to gamble his Social Security benefits into a stake for Eliza, Topsy, and Eva's lives.

Early American animation was not created in a vacuum and works such as this speak to and through the greater institutional and structural discourses of racism of their day, recirculating stereotypes that originated in minstrelsy and which continue to this day.
