Conclusion, Page 302
In To Beep or Not to Beep (1963), Wile E. Coyote looks imploringly to his audience moments before the suffering begins again. Cartoons offered the illusion of suffering as a joke, a repetitious ritual of controlled (un)pleasure. This cartoon features Wile E. Coyote trying a variety of ACME products to try to outdo his adversary. Another example of sadomasochistic comedy, this cartoon is also an inside joke, as Donald Crafton has pointed out, on standard-issue animation equipment made by the ACME corporation.
