In The Minstrel Show (1932), animal characters black up for a minstrel show, suggesting that by the 1930s the connection between characters and minstrelsy had become vestigial. Their return to the stage in this cartoon as minstrels points to the nostalgic place that minstrelsy held in 1930s popular media. Opening with a parade , the group mounts a stage and performs a variety show with song and dance routines, solo songs, and instrumental interludes for a crowded theatre.
