Conclusion, Page 300

A running gag in Warner Bros. Road-Runner cartoons—here The Fast and the Furry-ous (1949)—is Wile E. Coyote's misguided belief that ACME products will allow him to overcome his own physical limitations and capture the Road Runner. The cartoon offers the possibility of empathizing with Wile E. Coyote, yet as violence inevitably finds him,  viewers are afforded sadistic pleasure, the opportunity to laugh at inconsequential violence.
