As a widely and regularly enjoyed popular stage entertainment, blackface minstrelsy had its greatest circulation on the nineteenth-century stage, and in hand-drawn animation in the twentieth century. Yet American commercial animation and blackface minstrelsy share far more than the surface similarities of the white gloves, wide eyes, and painted mouth, as a brief history of the form will reveal....
