Influenced by animation's uneasy racial past, Art Spiegelman chose to use cats as Nazis and mice as Jews in his graphic novel Maus (1986), a mixture of of memoir, fiction,  and biography based on Spiegelman's father's personal experiences as a Holocaust survivor.
