In Ko-Ko the Barber (1925), Max Fleischer is tricked into blacking up when Ko-Ko slips out of his animated world and into his shaving cream.

Early animated characters seemed to resist the animator's hand, yet this illusion of resistance was created by the animators themselves. Later, this trope was given a twist in Daffy Duck's interplay with his animator in Duck Amuck (1953).
