Not all cartoon characters were minstrels, and not all cartoons were equally performative. Although less narratively layered than McCay's Gertie or the Flesicher Ko-Ko cartoons, Carlson's Dreamy Dud and Paul Terry's Aesop's Fables both feature more self-contained story-lines, with characters who still nevertheless acknowledge their spectators from time to time.
