Conclusion, Page 298

In Petering Out (1927), Walter Lantz and Pete the Pup struggle for control of the scene. Animation's inherent violence did not end with the expulsion of the animator's hand from the screen. Instead, it turned inwards, appearing as the trope of the comic duo, borrowed from vaudeville. From Tambo and Bones, to Walter Lantz and Pete the Pup, to Max Fleischer and Ko-Ko, to Daffy and Porky, Bugs and Elmer, Tom and Jerry, even as it changed with the times this trope continued, and characters engaged in a perpetual struggle.

The theme song from  The Itchy and Scratchy Show—the cartoon within a cartoon of The Simpsons—sums up this struggle perfectly.
