Conclusion, Page 304

Warner Bros. What's Opera Doc? (1957) mocks the pretensions of the upper classes with its self-reflexive reinvention of Wagner's Ring Cycle, and at key moments both Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny attempt to enlist audience members, breaking the fourth wall. This convention hearkens back to animation's vaudeville days when the boundary between stage and screen was more porous. In the end, Elmer Fudd thinks that he has killed Bugs Bunny; Bugs, quite alive, reminds us that unlike cartoons, operas never end happily.
