English and Comparative Literature 225 Anniversary Timeline

1849 - Albert Micajah Shipp (1819-1887) Becomes Professor of English Literature

At the beginning of the year, Albert Micajah Shipp is appointed professor of English literature and history, one of the earliest dedicated professorships in English literature in the United States. The following year French is substituted for English literature and assigned to Instructor Henri Herrisse. By 1854 Shipp is teaching history exclusively.
