1856, December - Hildreth Hosea Smith (1820-1908) Becomes Professor of Modern Languages

In December Hildreth Hosea Smith is elected professor of modern languages, a position he held until the University closed in 1868 following the Civil War. He was a personality on campus and earned the nickname “Old Tige” (short for “tiger”) for his strength, which he displayed in famously fighting a house fire on campus. Smith taught French primarily but also offered “volunteer classes . . . [in] German, Spanish, and Italian, should any desire it” (Catalogue 1856-1857, 31).
