1909 - College of Liberal Arts Established

The College of Liberal Arts is established. It became the College of Arts and Sciences in 1935. University President Francis Preston Venable (1856-1934) sought to reorganize several areas of his administration. In 1909 he placed responsibility for the undergraduate degree program leading to the Bachelor of Arts in a new College of Liberal Arts (formerly known as “The College”).  English Professor Edward Kidder Graham (1876-1918) became the College’s first dean.
