1971 - Leroy Martin (1943-1988) Earns Ph.D. in English

Leroy Martin, Jr., is the department’s first Black male to earn a Ph.D. in English. His dissertation, “Participial Constructions in Early Modern English,” was directed by Professor James Gaskin (1921-1995). He taught at Clark College in Atlanta and died in 1988.
