1966 - Curriculum in American Studies Established

In the 1966-1967 academic year the Curriculum in American Studies begins offering classes leading to the B.A. in American Studies. Professor of English Richard Colton Lyon (1926-2012) is the first chair of the curriculum, succeeded the following year by C. Townsend Ludington (1936- ). In addition to two American Studies courses, students were required to enroll in courses in English, political science, religion, and history, as well as courses distributed among the arts, philosophy, and natural sciences.
