English and Comparative Literature 225 Anniversary Timeline

1935 - The General College Established

A major curriculum revision became effective in September 1935, establishing the General College as a separate entity (until 1961, when it was merged with the College of Arts and Sciences). The studies in the General College continued to include two years of English composition and literature, a modern foreign language, and a natural science. One year of a social science, a year of hygiene, and a sophomore elective also were required. The General College institutionalized the several-decades practice of dividing the undergraduate curriculum between general education courses in the first two years and upper-division courses in the junior and senior years. Initially, seven advisors, including English Professor Harry Russell (1902-1996), helped some 1300 first- and second-year students chart their General College coursework.
