1877 - Modern Graduate Degrees Established

Following the lead of Johns Hopkins University, UNC announces graduate programs leading to an earned Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Ph.D. program. These were research-based programs with prescribed coursework and examinations, as determined by the faculty in each department. The prior custom of granting a Master of Arts to any graduate who had practiced his profession for at least three years was discontinued. Just as with the undergraduate degrees, graduate programs were only open to White men.
