1901 - The Department of English Formally Established

The Department of English is formally established by the Board of Trustees. Professor Charles Alphonso Smith (1864-1924) serves as the first chair of the department. The 1900-1901 catalogue lists a total of 14 courses for undergraduate and graduate students and two courses in “Expression” (debate and orations).
