The third edition (1972) was edited by Professor C. Hugh Holman (1914-1981), who was joined by Professor William Harmon (1938- ) as co-editor for the fifth edition (1986). Now in its twelfth edition (2012), Harmon’s A Handbook to Literature remains a standard reference on literature and literary criticism in English, providing an alphabetical listing of more than 2,000 important terms and facts in literature, linguistics, rhetoric, criticism, printing, bookselling, and information technology.
