1975, April - Women’s Studies Program Approved

A proposal to establish an interdisciplinary program in women’s studies is approved in April 1975. Titled “A Women’s Studies Program at UNC? A Positive Reply,” the proposal outlines a curriculum for an undergraduate major in women’s studies modeled on the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, with relevant courses drawn from approximately 10 departments and administered through the Office of the Assistant Dean for Experimental and Special Studies. By 1980 the Women’s Studies Program, directed by Professor Mary Turner Lane (1918-2009) of the School of Education, becomes a free-standing program in the College of Arts and Sciences.  In 2012 the curriculum was renamed the Department of Women and Gender Studies; it offers an undergraduate major and minor as well as a graduate certificate. The department is also home to the Program in Sexuality Studies.
