The University awarded honorary graduate degrees prior to the Civil War, but earned degrees date back to 1877, when it became possible to take postgraduate courses. Dean Smith, working with a committee of faculty, established formal procedures for graduate coursework, residency requirements, comprehensive examinations, and the writing of theses and dissertations. The number of graduate courses grew from 45 in 1903 to 77 by 1914 (Puaca 11).
