Although technically hired to teach Modern British literature, many of the faculty at the time were “hoping she could spread out and cover some of the gaps in our curriculum,” as she had done some feminism and literary theory, and she was given free range in her teaching. She taught the first course on post-colonial literature and theory in 1993 and the first course on queer literature and theory in the mid-90s, both of which were popular new fields at the time. Additionally, she taught the first course on African literature in 1998, broadening the concept of British literature to include the Anglophone diaspora. Reminiscing, Dr. Cooper said, “I really did what I wanted... it was good to be on the cutting edge.”
