English and Comparative Literature 225 Anniversary Timeline

1916 - Honors Program in English Language and Literature Established

A program for undergraduate honors in language and literature is established under the leadership of a committee chaired by Edwin Greenlaw (1874-1931). The program required a reading knowledge of a language other than English, four courses chosen from one department in the Division of Language and Literature, two courses chosen from a second department in the Division (or a history course), “fortnightly conferences at which books and reading in connection with the entire scheme of study are discussed,” “the provision for lecture courses in comparative literature,” and “an essay of some length” (Catalogue 1916-1917, 49).
