1941 - World War II Begins

In response to the December 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States declares war on the Axis powers. From 1942 to 1945 UNC hosted a pre-flight school on campus to train pilots for the U.S. Navy, as well as ROTC unit, and a V-12 program for naval officers. Over 20,000 men and women attended special military training on campus during the war.
