extra food, etc. and are
allowed to go outside in squads
guarded to do various kinds
of work. Several of these
squads passed close to us
Big fellows + looked contented
The guards said they would
not try to escape if the gates
were left open. Newspapers
say they are allowed 2 blankets
each + their own recruits can
get but one. Then on to Virginia
Water where we got a good
lunch at the Wheat Sheap
Hotel. Stopped at Hampton
Court
to see the gardens and
grape vine + arr London 430
Days run about 70 miles
Total milage [sic] 962 in 13 days
or 74 miles per day.
Good roads everywhere.
Some dust only the last
few days. No rain. Top
down all the time. Car
ran beautifully. Had 11
flat tires due to poor
inner tubes. Breton did
