July 31 Spent the morning driving
about town + seeing the interior
of Cathedral. Churchyard +
cloisters fine. The 1000 years old
rose bush is here. The present
sprouts only a few years old
Many fine old carved + painted
houses in town more fine ones
than any other German City.
Left at 2 for Brunswick
28 miles. Flat country well
cultivated. Good rooms ^ 60 M. + dinner
at Deutsches Haus. All took
short walk after arrival.
In evening Jep + I went to a 
garden restaurant. Good fare
+ large crowd. All taking beer [?]
Great excitement + rush to get
extra of war news.
Warmer today + no rain 1st day
since landing without some rain
Have had salon + bath + english
spoken at every Hotel.
Aug 1 Fine warm day. Alarming
war news. Sale of gasoline
stopped + can not get enough to
take us to Berlin. Visited Am.
