at foot of very steep decline
At Alexandria hotel with
garden (old fashioned) got
fair rooms + table. N. + I
took long walk through town +
much amused in following
town crier announcing concert
for benefit of Belgian refugees.
England is raising
much money for them in
various ways. Cooler and
cloudy today. Run 56 miles.
Sept 29 Fine warm day
Left at 10. Roads steep +
fine views over land. At
Worchester [sic] turned South.
Stopped just outside of town +
looked at the mounds of a
Roman amphitheater perfect
in shape. At the seaside
resort of Weymouth found
the U.S. Battleship Tennesee [sic]
had left an hour
before. Portland harbor
full of English warships
Report was that some
German submarines were
