was in progress. Even street
paving is going on as usual.
Only in evening when the
shops close are there any crowds
or excitement evident.
All autos + taxis running here
as usual + there seems to 
be plenty of gasoline. Many
officers stopping + eating at this
Hotel. Also the embassy clerks
dine here. Many of the Americans
dine outside. Old Gen C
Kieffer of Ohio here + seems to
be having good time.
Aug 8 Cooler + light rain in morning
Went to Embassy. Notice posted
saying Ambassador had word from
State department that steamers
would eventually be provided to
take Americans home + that Mothers
and families with small children
would be given preference.
Went to Mendelsohn + Co and
offered 100 pounds draft for 75 pounds
+ then the same for 50 pounds but
they said they could not give
so much. I told them I
