Klallam Grammar

Appendix D: Directed Motion Verbs

These verbs specify only the direction of motion without specifying the manner of motion. Many other verbs in Klallam also indicate direction of motion. There are, for example, three words that translate as ‘fall’ and differ only in the direction of motion:  čáq̓ ‘fall over,’ híyəŋ ‘fall off,’  x̣ɬíyŋ ‘fall backwards.’ These and similar verbs are not included in this list since they specify the manner as well as the direction of motion. Also not included here are the plurals, diminutives, actuals, and various transitive verbs of directed motion built on these intransitive verbs. For details on the meaning and use of these, look them up in the Klallam Dictionary.
