Klallam Grammar

52 Adverbial Prefixes

Klallam has a number of prefixes that have adverb‑like meanings. These prefixes can add the ideas ‘somewhat,’ ‘in process,’ ‘directionless.’ These prefixes typically attach to and modify verbs, but some also attach to nouns and adjectives.

We have already seen two of these adverbial prefixes in earlier sections. The nuʔ‑ prefix is used in the comparative construction in §16.2, and the ʔuʔ- prefix is used in some time expressions in §19.3 and §20.3, and in expressing the idea ‘but, without,’ §17.2. This section provides more detail on those two prefixes and covers two other adverbial prefixes found in the Klallam language.
