4.2. Particular, specific article: cə ____

 

hiyáʔ húʔpt.                   ‘The deer goes’ or ‘That deer goes.’

hiyáʔ yaʔ húʔpt.             ‘The/That deer went.’

hiyáʔ caʔ húʔpt.             ‘The/That deer will go.’

hiyáʔ u yaʔ húʔpt.           ‘Did the/that deer go?’

ƛ̓kʷə́t cn húʔpt.              ‘I take the/that deer.’         


1  The article is the most common and most useful article in Klallam. It is usually translated as ‘the’ or ‘that.’
2  The article is frequently pronounced c or t or .
3  Note that, as always, the verb in Klallam comes first. Where in English we say ‘the deer goes,’ the Klallam is ‘goes the deer’ when translated word for word.
4  Note that the noun phrase is the subject with an intransitive verb such as hiyáʔ but is the direct object with a transitive verb such as ƛ̓kʷə́t.
5  The articles are never stressed.
ʔuʔə́y̓ u cxʷ.‘Are you well?’
ʔuʔə́y̓ cn.‘I’m fine.’
ƛ̓kʷə́t u cxʷ cə qʷúʔ.‘Did you take the water?
ʔáwə. ƛ̓kʷə́t yaʔ cn cə tálə.‘No. I took the money.’
