Depicted as Walt Disney's child, Mickey Mouse was so deeply associated with sweetness and light that the company had to mount a PR campaign to re-introduce his "edge" for the 2010 videogame Epic Mickey. A frame shot from the video game Epic Mickey (2010) reveals a darker, less wholesome side of Mickey Mouse than his previous incarnations.

Achieving global fame in the 1930s, Mickey had become a household name, invoked in songs such as Cole Porter's "You're the Top," and producing a dense knot of semiotic connotations in his excessive commodification.
