SENĆOŦEN: A Grammar of the Saanich Language

15 Questions: ‘Who?,’ ‘What?,’ ‘Someone,’ ‘Something’

In §3.2 we described how to make questions that can be answered with a ‘yes’ or a ‘no.’ There are many questions that cannot be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ ‘Who are you?’ and ‘What is this?’ are examples. In this section, we will find out how to ask some of the other kinds of questions.

There are a number of types of these other kinds of questions. SENĆOŦEN has special question words for ‘who,’ ‘what,’ ‘whose,’ ‘how,’ ‘which one,’ ‘which part,’ ‘when,’ ‘what time,’ ‘where at,’ ‘where to,’ ‘where from,’ ‘where put,’ ‘where take,’ ‘how many times,’ ‘how many days,’ ‘how much,’ ‘say what,’ and ‘do what.’

Right now, we focus on only two of the possible types of questions. This section covers the basic questions asking ‘Who?’ and ‘What?’
