SENĆOŦEN: A Grammar of the Saanich Language

5 Possessive Pronouns

Every language has ways of indicating ideas of possession. In English we use possessive words ‘my,’ ‘your,’ ‘his,’ ‘her,’ ‘its,’ and ‘their.’ We also have possessive words ‘mine,’ ‘yours,’ ‘hers,’ and ‘theirs.’

In SENĆOŦEN, possession translated ‘my,’ ‘your,’ ‘his,’ and so on, is indicated by adding something to the beginning (prefix) or end (suffix) of the word for the thing possessed.

To express the idea of English ‘mine,’ ‘yours,’ and so on in SENĆOŦEN you use a special word, SȻÁ¸, with the possessive prefixes and suffixes.

This special word SȻÁ¸ is also used for emphatic possession, which in English is expressed with extra stress on the possessive word, as in, ‘It’s my money!’
