12.2. ‘What?’: stáŋ
stáŋ ʔay̓. | ‘What is he/she/it?’ |
stáŋ ʔay̓ či kʷánəŋət. | ‘What runs?’ |
► 1 The word stáŋ means ‘what,’ and it also can mean ‘something.’
► 2 These models show that stáŋ is used in about the same way as cán.
► 3 With stáŋ it is possible, and probably more usual, to use ʔuč instead of ʔay̓. So the following are good, too:
stáŋ ʔuč. ‘What is he/she/it?’
stáŋ ʔuč či kʷánəŋət. ‘What ran?
► 4 The word stáŋ can be used as a sentence by itself meaning ‘what is it?’
► 5 Here is some more useful vocabulary. Add these to your list of Klallam articles (remember §4): tiə ‘this’; təsə ‘that’; kʷəsə ‘that (not visible)’
stáŋ ʔuč tiə? | ‘What is this?’
níɬ kʷi nəsʔíɬən. | ‘It’s my food.’
stáŋ ʔay̓ cə ʔən̓sʔíɬən. | ‘What is your food?’
níɬ kʷi nəsɬúp̓. | ‘It’s my soup.’ |
