‣ 1 The speech act modifiers in this set are less common than any of those in §48.1. In fact, only the particles in model 1 and model 5 are regularly used by the youngest L1 speakers. The others are understood in context, but are not a regular part of their fluent usage.
‣ 2 Review the ĆE command marker covered in §3.1. In models 1 and 2 here, we have two new imperative-like speech act modifiers. The difference among ĆE, ĆEȽ, and ÁȻE is not entirely one of degree. ĆE makes the statement a command that is a little stronger than YÁ¸ SW̱ without any imperative marker. ĆEȽ makes it more of a suggestion—the speaker is encouraging the listener to act. ĆEȽ is often translated with ‘should.’ ÁȻE is strong, expressing urgency—the speaker is urging the listener to act.
‣ 3 The particle ȻE¸E in model 3 is difficult to translate directly into English. It is used when the speaker wants to let the listener know that something is expected to happen soon.
‣ 4 In model 4, the speaker uses the ȻE¸Í¸E particle to let the listener know that they just realized something or just remembered it.
‣ 5 The WO¸ speech act modifier, shown in model 5, allows the speaker to express a speculation about the statement. Sentences with this particle are often translated with ‘I wonder’ or ‘it seems like.’
