Basket body decorated with faded green (?) designs on natural ground, one on each side: two equilateral crosses with four arms bent at right angles (right-facing swastikas) are found opposite one another and two "Z" patterns opposite one another. Around the body of the basket, there are rectangular brown (possibly faded green?) decorations, each occurring approx. 15 cm apart and measuring approx. 6 x 2 cm. Damage and unraveling on lid near tip. Typed note inside basket says: "38. Lidded Storage Basket. Tribe: Alaskan Eskimo - Nunivak Island. Design: six faded 2" x 1" dark bars around body. Size: 10"h., 15 1/2 " dia. 9 1/2" opening. Circa: 1900. Condition: basket - good-: the conical knob of the lid is missing as a result of the Curtis household Cocker Spaniel "Peanuts" biting it off. Damage and unraveling on lid near tip. Typed note inside basket says: "38. Lidded Storage Basket. Tribe: Alaskan Eskimo - Nunivak Island. Design: six faded 2" x 1" dark bars around body.
