The Beauty of Mending

Leila is a Muslim woman living in Lebanon with her three children, until she lost custody and had to flee to the Netherlands leaving them behind. Living in the Netherlands was difficult because she rarely got to see her children, and after several years she ended up losing all three children in one way or another; one passed away, one eloped, and one was arrested.

Meanwhile, Anne Frank is also living in the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Due to the Nazi Party seizing the Netherlands she was forced to go into hiding with her family in the attic of her dad's office building. While in hiding, Anne Frank was not on good terms with her mother and often dreamed of having another mother figure who she could relate to.

As the war continued the Nazis closed in on Anne's hiding spot. However, the American armed forced planned an attack days before the Nazis were planning on invading Amsterdam. Isaac Davis, an American marine discovered Anne's hiding spot, secures the position, and extracts her from the danger zone. Anne relocated to another city in the Netherlands and after a few months the war concludes and the Nazi Army falls apart.

Years later, Anne is browsing a flower shop for some fresh daisies. She was at the cash register when the woman behind her offered to pay for her flowers. Anne thanked the woman. The woman replied, "You're welcome. You just remind me of my daughter Alice." Anne and the woman walked home to find that they live in the same apartment building. As Anne enters her apartment, she asks the woman for her name.

"My name is Leila."

5 years later, Anne and Leila are great friends. The bond they formed at the flower shop grew into a mother-daughter relationship that lasted a lifetime.
