As the performance of animation on the vaudeville stage declined, it shifted into public relations. A caricature of John Randolph Bray mocks the cartooning process in a feature in Photoplay, circa 1916. The illustrations in this feature comment ironically on the laborious process of animation, depicting Bray sweating into a tube that feeds into a swimming pool while bent over at his desk drawing his creations.
