Rescate de recursos de información: Manejo de agua y hongos A group of graduate students (future librarians and archivist) from the Escuela Graduada de Ciencias y Tecnologías de la Información (EGCTI) from the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras had the opportunity to practice rescuing affected collections after a catastrophic event. The workshop was offered by Soraya Serra, registrar at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, at the Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín.

14. Episode 25: Disaster Response In Episode 25, Dewey Decibel features interviews with two librarians whose expertise has them on the front lines of environmental disaster relief and preparedness. First, American Libraries' Associate Editor Terra Dankowski talks with Miriam Centeno, a collections care coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Libraries. Miriam traveled to Puerto Rico to help train librarians there in preservation and collections care following Hurricane Maria in fall 2017. Next, American Libraries Associate Editor and Dewey Decibel host Phil Morehart speaks with Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, coordinator for library sustainability at Mid-Hudson Library System in Poughkeepsie, New York, and author of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library's Future in an Uncertain World and Resilience, both published by ALA Editions.

14. NOAA GOES-16 Satellite captured Hurricane Maria making landfall on Puerto Rico on the morning of September 20th With 155 mph winds, Hurricane Maria eyewall makes landfall on Yabucoa at 6:15am. Crossing diagonally the Island, existing through Arecibo at 2:00pm. Despite its classification according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale as a Category 4, the lack of accurate data when moving across Puerto Rico caused by the loss of the Doppler Radar and the immensity of its 28 miles eye radius supports that stronger wind gust were felt in higher elevations. Over 38 inches of rain and surges up to 9 feet caused flooding and landslides affecting access to roads and communities for weeks. The electrical grid was destroyed, leaving the entire Island without power and potable water.

Heritage Emergency and Response Training (HEART) Event - The Heritage Emergency National Task Force (HENTF) and the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative, in collaboration with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provided the Heritage Emergency and Response Training to museum professionals in the Island. The training took place at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and topics ranged from collection salvage techniques, evacuation and long term planning for emergency management in a weeklong intensive course.
