May was an intensive month for professional development and spreading the word of the diverse initiatives that had taken place for the last eight months. The Heritage Emergency Response Alliance (HERA) presented the webinar "Picking Up the Pieces: Helping Puerto Rican Cultural Heritage Organizations After Hurricanes Irma and Maria", and the National Archives Assembly and Preservation Programs presented “Mission Possible: Emergency Response for Cultural Heritage Institutions in Puerto Rico.” Both covered what they discovered and the work performed to aid the recovery process on the Island.

A few more articles were published and a master thesis by Aziria D. Rodríguez submitted to the Department of Comparative Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology includes a whole chapter about memes related to Hurricane Maria. Also, a group of graduate students (future librarians and archivists) had the opportunity to practice rescuing affected collections after a catastrophic event as part of their preservation course training.

Rescate de recursos de información: Manejo de agua y hongos A group of graduate students (future librarians and archivist) from the Escuela Graduada de Ciencias y Tecnologías de la Información (EGCTI) from the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras had the opportunity to practice rescuing affected collections after a catastrophic event. The workshop was offered by Soraya Serra, registrar at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, at the Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín.

“Helping libraries recover post-Hurricane Maria” Publication - Newsletter for the Friends of the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, Friendscript, summarizing how through Miriam Centeno they helped libraries in Puerto Rico with a donation of 3 preservation kit supplies. They were received by the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras, and the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico.

Episode 25: Disaster Response In Episode 25, Dewey Decibel features interviews with two librarians whose expertise has them on the front lines of environmental disaster relief and preparedness. First, American Libraries' Associate Editor Terra Dankowski talks with Miriam Centeno, a collections care coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Libraries. Miriam traveled to Puerto Rico to help train librarians there in preservation and collections care following Hurricane Maria in fall 2017. Next, American Libraries Associate Editor and Dewey Decibel host Phil Morehart speaks with Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, coordinator for library sustainability at Mid-Hudson Library System in Poughkeepsie, New York, and author of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library's Future in an Uncertain World and Resilience, both published by ALA Editions.
