Recollections of My Life and Reflections on Times and Events During It: A Memoir by Father W. J. Howlett

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom's Cabin)

Uncle Tom is the titular character in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Tom is characterized by his subservient and obedient personality. This has led the phrase “Uncle Tom” to become a derogatory descriptor referring to a black person that is considered too deferential to a white person.
