Recollections of My Life and Reflections on Times and Events During It: A Memoir by Father W. J. Howlett

Horace Greeley

Founder and editor of the New York Tribune, Horace Greeley was a liberal populist and a vocal opponent of slavery. Though he was strongly in favor of westward expansion, he is often miscredited as having first coined the phrase, “Go west, young man,” which was in fact originated by Indiana journalist John B.L. Soule.
